PERMIT TITLE: Magnesium
CODE SECTION: (Virginia Statewide Fire Prevention Code) 3601.2
FEE: $ 225.00 (Check payable to the City of Richmond)
SCOPE: An operational permit is required to melt, cast, heat treat or grid more than 10 pounds (4.54 kg) of magnesium.
PERMIT EXPIRATION: ONE (1) year from date issued.
REQUIREMENTS: Permit holder agrees to abide by the Virginia Statewide Fire Prevention Code and any special stipulations noted on permit, as well as the following:
- Submit floor plan (showing hazardous material areas, potential ignition sources and items/areas of concern), MSDS, description of operation and safety provisions (including emergency procedures and equipment).
- Indoor storage maximum 1000 cubic feet per pile with aisles width not be less than the height of piles or 4 feet, whichever is greater. Magnesium over 50 cubic feet per pile to have aisle (for fine scrap: over 50 feet wide or fire barrier) separating from combustible materials.
- Magnesium grinding, buffing, or wire-brushing to have approved dust safety process. Daily collect chips, turning and other fine magnesium, place in vented covered steel container and remove to an approved location.
- "No Smoking" signs shall be posted and enforcement of all safety procedures.
- Fire-extinguishing material shall be provided for every operator performing machining,grinding or other processing operation on magnesium as follows:
- Within 30 ft. a supply of extinguishing material in an approved container with a hand scoop or shovel for applying the material; or
- Within 75 ft. an approved portable fire extinguisher complying with NFPA 10
- Appropriate extinguishing materials, devices or systems shall be readily available within 30 feet of processing and staff trained in emergency procedures and use of extinguishers.
- Flammable solids shall not be stored in basements.
Also need Hazardous Materials permit if over 100 pounds of flammable solids (such as magnesium); contact us to discuss largest expected inventory of any hazardous material. A full inspection by our office is required before such permits are issued.
