| Abstract: Represents US Postal Service (USPS) Zip Codes. | |||
| Purpose: To define/describe the extent and boundaries of zip codes for use in GIS. This GIS layer is used to relate properties (hence addresses) to the correlating school zone for use in the City's data warehousing and central address systems. | |||
| Supplemental Information: The City of Richmond symbolized parcels using Central Address and CAMA-based zip code values and interpreted where zip code boundaries might be. More specifically, ZIP Codes are the 5-digit codes the US Postal Service assigns to every address to help make mail delivery more efficient. ZIP Codes are not really boundaries at all. In reality, "ZIP Codes" are simply collections of addresses that have the same 5-digit code. They usually don't follow legal town/city boundaries and usually don't follow the set of geography defined by the census bureau. They are established for mail carriers that follow routes. The USPS doesn't produce ZIP Code maps. A common way to establish zip codes is by geocoding a file that contains ZIPS and to subsequently interpret where a boundary might exist. | |||
