| Abstract: Linear representation of parcel outlines. The parcel is a generalized area corresponding to the smallest number of property ownership units that can be located on a two-dimensional map without overlapping each other, where ownership units are defined by a real property deed of the Commonwealth of Virginia. The parcel line features normally correspond to the property line, but condos and other special ownership arrangements resulting in vertical units are generalized as a single feature. | |||
| Purpose: Parcel lines are established as one of the first steps in the creation of a parcel polygon. Parcel lines are digitized and then polygons are constructed from them using topology editing tools. Many thematic GIS area layers have boundaries that follow property lines; these parcel lines are also used in the construction of those thematic area polygon features. | |||
