Officer Wendel was shot and killed after responding to a call involving a suspected drug dealer near East 33rd Street and Midlothian Turnpike in the city's southside, at 1723 hours.
Officer Wendel was patting down the suspect and when he felt a gun, the boy began to struggle. The suspect was able to pull out the gun and shot Officer Wendel four times in the neck and back.
Officers responded to the scene when they received a 911 call of an officer shot at 1727 hours. Officer Wendel was transported to MCV Hospital where he succumbed to his wounds one hour later.
The suspect was captured several days later and charged with capital murder. The suspect was convicted of first-degree and capital murder on December 10, 2003. On December 11, 2003, he was sentenced to life in prison without parole.
Officer Wendel had served with the Richmond Police Department for five years. He is survived by his wife, two young sons, a young daughter, brother, and his parents.
