The next election in the City of Richmond may be a primary election on Tuesday, June 12, 2018. This election will only be held if the Democratic Party or Republican Party call for a primary election and more than one political party candidate files for the primary. The two offices for which a primary may be called are U.S. Senate and U.S. House of Representatives. Whether or not a primary will be held will not be known until early April 2018. If a primary is held, the deadline to register to vote is Monday, May 21, 2018. The deadline to apply for an absentee ballot in person (with limited exceptions) is Saturday, June 9, 2018. The Office of the General Registrar is open for absentee voting during the week from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM and on Saturday, June 9, 2018 from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.


Photo ID is now required to vote at your polling place or in person absentee voting. Acceptable forms of photo ID include: valid Virginia Driver's license; DMV issued photo ID; valid United States passport; valid employee photo ID; other government issued photo ID; and, valid Virginia college or university student photo ID. If you do not have an acceptable form of photo ID, you may get a free one for voting purposes at any local Virginia voter registration office. More information is available at
