The Department of Social Services investigates reports of abuse, neglect, and exploitation of adults aged 60 and over and
incapacitated adults ages 18 and over. The program's goal is to lessen or alleviate the risk of abuse and neglect, including
self-neglect, and exploitation among seniors or adults who need protection. Individuals must be city residents or the incident
must have occurred in the city in order to be eligible for this service. Adult Protective Services are available without regard
to income.
City staff will conduct an investigation. A wide range of services is available including companion care in the home, assistance
with financial management, counseling, emergency assistance, a change of housing, and legal assistance in obtaining guardianship.

Adult Stabilization
Single adults who are disabled, elderly, homeless or displaced due to code enforcement actions can receive assistance in order to
become self-sufficient and independent.
Through the program, social services staff will address emergencies to minimize the risk of neglect and abuse. Counseling may be
offered to parents/caretakers. A social worker will assess the current family situation and may make referrals to the appropriate
community resource or agency. The social worker may also attend court hearings.
Some of the available services are offered without regard to income. However, most services require customers to meet income
guidelines at 50% of the State Median Income Scale.
