General Relief (GR) provides limited financial assistance to individuals and families. Someone who is eligible for assistance from Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI), may or may not be eligible for GR. Because this is a local program, the kind of assistance available varies from locality to locality. In Richmond, limited financial assistance may be provided to individuals in the following situations:

  • Able to work but are unemployed (pregnant woman only)
  • Unable to work because of a disability, or because of illness in the family
  • In an adult care residence, a treatment center, halfway house, or group home
  • Has ongoing medical needs
  • Has applied for SSI (Supplemental Security Income)
  • Has a minor child in the home but does not qualify for TANF because the child is not a close relative
  • Has emergency shelter needs
  • Burial assistance up to $2,310 per burial
