Public Education

This is our 5th Grade Fire Safety Education Program (F.S.E.P.). It is presented in Richmond City Schools through weekly 1-hour lessons, for four weeks. Homework is assigned during lessons 1 and 3, and quizzes are given at the end of lessons 2 and 4. After the program has been presented to all the 5th grade classes at a given school, an award ceremony is held to reward the children with the highest combined grades. The "Chief", "Captain" and "Lieutenant" of each class are presented with a cap, T-shirt, or other reward. All children that achieve a passing grade are presented with a Certificate of Achievement.

Additionally, a Fire Safety Poster Contest is held for all 5th graders. Prizes are awarded at the end of the year during the F.S.E.P. banquet honoring contest winners. The "Officers" from each school are also invited and recognized for their achievements.

These efforts are targeted not only at preventing injuries and deaths but hopefully preventing fires from ever starting. Firefighters teach safety behaviors to public school students, offer free child safety seat checks, and provide free smoke detectors for residents who need them. The Richmond Department of Fire and Emergency Services also works to engage the public through the following programs:
