Permit Holder Guideline #27

PERMIT TITLE: Lumber / Wood

CODE SECTION: (Virginia Statewide Fire Prevention Code) 1901.2

FEE: $75.00 (Check payable to the City of Richmond)

SCOPE: Need permit to store or process over 100,000 board feet of lumber, 200 cubic feet wood chips, 1000 combustible pallets, or similar materials.

PERMIT EXPIRATION: ONE (1) year from date issued.

REQUIREMENTS: Permit holder agrees to abide by the Virginia Statewide Fire Prevention Code and any special stipulations noted on permit, as well as the following:

  1. Systematic cleaning of the entire plant, to prevent the accumulations of combustible dust and spilled combustible or flammable liquids.
  2. Post and enforce 'No Smoking' signs.
  3. Piles shall be stabilized. Lumber stacks not to exceed 25 feet high, 150 feet wide and 250 feet long; yet not exceed 150,000 cubic feet per pile. Chips or pallet piles at most 12 feet high, 50 feet wide, 150 feet long. Piles shall be separated from adjacent piles or other exposures by approved fire apparatus access roads of at least 20 feet wide. Where storage pile configurations could change because of changes in product operations and processing, the access plan shall be submitted for approval when required by the fire code official.
  4. Portable fire extinguishers with a minimum rating of 4-A:60-B:C shall be within 50 feet travel distance from any machine producing shaving or sawdust, on all vehicles, and at all processing equipment.
  5. The owner or operator shall develop an emergency plan for monitoring, controlling and extinguishing spot fire. The emergency plan shall be submitted to the fire code official for review and approval.
  6. Storage sites shall be level and on solid ground or other all-weather surface. Sites shall be thoroughly cleaned before transferring wood products to the site.
  7. Prevent ignition sources, such as sparks (by electrical bonding or avoiding metal items from entering) in the wood handling, processing equipment, or storage areas.
