The Before and After School Program was established by City Council to assist in improving reading at grade level, academic achievement and self improvement. It is a partnership between the Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities and Richmond Public Schools. The program allows children who are in kindergarten through fifth grade, to participate in educational and recreational activities each and every day of the school year! We promote the "learning is fun" philosophy.
Before and After School Program Cost
$100 Registration Fee (payable in two disbursements)
The Before and After School Program is open each day the schools are open. The program begins immediately after school is dismissed and ends promptly at 5:45 p.m. Children must be picked up each day by 5:45 p.m. Staff members are Richmond City employees. Adult volunteers from various organizations in the community assist with the program.
Features of the Before and After School Program:
- Provides life skills activities by public and private sector organizations;
- Provides a high ratio of adult supervision and leadership to participants;
- Educates youth in community involvement;
- Offers youth the opportunity to engage in arts and crafts, music, dance, nature and the environment, games and sports;
- Develops interest in cultural and athletic activities; and
- Offers a daily snack or meal provided by the U.S. Department of Agriculture under the Child and Adult Care Food Program.

- Promotes children's success in reading by third grade;
- Impacts positively on youth life choices as they relate to community and violence prevention;
- Provides youth opportunity to participate in special interest clubs and activities;
- Educates youth to make constructive leisure time activity choices; and
- Serves as a feeder system for Middle and High School arts programs and athletic teams.
