Civilian of the Month

Margaret is the Administrative Assistant for Second Precinct. In addition to exceptionally completing her daily duties, she actively participates in many activities within the Department as well as the community in an effort to strengthen relationships between civilians, officers and citizens.

Margaret’s daily duties and responsibilities are summarized in the following array of tasks:

She handles the numerous phone calls from citizens as well as officers and she expertly responds to these calls through knowledgeable advice or appropriate referrals to other resources. On numerous occasions Margaret has been able to calm a citizen’s anger and frustration by listening to their concerns and connecting them with the right officer or by taking appropriate action. Margaret’s relationship with the police officers in the precinct enables her, as a civilian, to offer a unique perspective to citizens who call to inquire about the actions of our police officers. She often is able to assist those citizens to better understand the police officer’s perspective.

She also manages the abundance of citizens who walk into Second Precinct daily searching for advice and answers with professionalism and courtesy at all times. She greets them in a friendly manner, and she is attentive and responsive to their concerns.

When she is not fielding phone calls, Margaret monitors the citizen complaint tracking system on a daily basis. She checks the system for new entries on Monday mornings, and she works to ensure that any new issues are resolved and closed out by week’s end.

Margaret is the coordinator for all civilian volunteers and interns assigned to Second Precinct. She ensures that the volunteers and interns are given suitable assignments during their tenure at the precinct and monitors their performance through the completion of their assignments.

Margaret also assists the Precinct Commander and Executive Officer by coordinating the Ride-Alongs that are sent to Second Precinct. She notifies the Sergeants as to the scheduling of the participants, and she ensures that the paperwork is in order and in place for the Sergeants ahead of the arrival of the Ride-Along participants.

Additionally, Margaret’s dedication to spreading good cheer and team morale within the Department has led her to bring together all of the Administrative Assistants within the Police Department for a Holiday Party at Second Precinct.

Most notably, she has taken her commitment to the community a step further by assisting greatly with the Fifth Hispanic Academy to further strengthen the cultural relationship with many of the city’s Latino residents. She provided class members with invaluable handouts during the 10-week session. Margaret also was instrumental in coordinating the Academy’s graduation ceremony.

Her enthusiastic promotion of goodwill is shared within her community involvement for the Department, from Second Precinct Halloween Treats to Thanksgiving Dinner Giveaways to donations to Christmas families.
