Minimum Requirements

Employment Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen
  • Must have a High School Diploma or GED
  • Must be 21 years prior to completing our training academy
  • No felony convictions or domestic assault convictions
  • Possess a valid driver's license
  • No D.U.I. convictions in the past 5 years
  • Must pass a written and physical agility test
  • Must pass an extensive background investigation including a polygraph, psychological, medical and drug screening

Effective February 23, 2018, all candidates hired by the Richmond City Police Department must enter into a service tenure agreement for a period of 60 months (5 years). Upon acceptance of a conditional offer, Police Recruit candidates will review and acknowledge a notification of Service Tenure Agreement.

Upon hire, the Police Recruit candidate must acknowledge and agree to reimburse the City of Richmond Police Department for professional expenses incurred throughout the hiring process should the employee choose to voluntarily resign from the department within a 60 month period from the date of Police Recruit graduation. Reimbursement is not required for employees who are terminated, who resign in lieu of being discharged, killed in the line of duty, permanently disabled and unable to work as a full-time police office, or in circumstances mutually agreed upon by the Police Department and said employee.

Reimbursement expenses are as follows: Background Investigation, Pre-Employment Medical Examination, Pre-Employment Drug Screening, Pre-Employment, Psychological Testing, Uniforms and Equipment.

FAQ’s – Service Tenure Agreement

What is the total dollar expense of the Service Tenure Agreement required to be paid back to RPD?

Reimbursement expenses include costs related to: Background Investigation, Pre-Employment Medical Examination, Pre-Employment Drug Screening, Pre-Employment, Psychological Testing, and Uniforms and Equipment. This total cost will be cited in the formal Service Tenure Agreement as it may change as costs change. Currently is $5,000.00.

If I decide to resign while still a Police Recruit participating in the Basic Training Academy prior to graduation am I required to reimburse RPD for costs?

No. Reimbursement is only required once the Service Tenure Agreement is signed upon graduation from the Academy and taking the oath to become a sworn Police Officer.

Is the reimbursement cost prorated (i.e. if I resign after serving as a Police Officer for four (4) years (80%) is my reimbursement cost only 20% of the original total?

No. You will be required to serve the full five (5) years of the Service Tenure Agreement to satisfy your obligation.
