Our Department

The Department employs about 750 sworn men and women. If selected to join our community-based police team, you will assist us in improving the quality of life for our 200,000 residents.

Your Path to a Rewarding Career

Upon submission of an application, you will be required to complete a pre-screening form as well as a background questionnaire. If you would like to speed up the process, please download the two documents and include them with your application. The background packet can be notarized at the police department. Police Recruit

Upon determination that your application meets the minimum requirements for the Police Recruit position, you will be notified of the time, date, and location of the police entrance examination and fitness test. All notifications will be done electronically.

The police entrance examination is an entry-level law enforcement multiple-choice test. You will be tested on Basic Arithmetic, Reading Comprehension, Grammar Punctuation and Spelling, as well as Report Writing.

The fitness test consists of the following:

  1. The test begins from a seated position at which time a street address will be given. This address must be repeated correctly at the end of the test.
  2. Run 200 yards (Up and back a 50 foot distance six times)
  3. Step up on aerobic step bench 20 times.
  4. Perform 15 push-ups
  5. Perform 15 sit-ups
  6. Step up on aerobic step bench 20 times.
  7. Perform 15 push-ups
  8. Perform 15 sit-ups
  9. Run 200 yards (Up and back a 50 foot distance six times)
  10. Street Recall (If incorrect, penalty is to repeat 200 yard run)
  11. The time limit for the fitness test is 6 minutes 18 seconds.

Lateral Entry

Officers with current or recent certification from other departments may be eligible for a Lateral Entry. Officers must have experience in answering 911 calls as well as enforcing traffic laws. Please indicate "Lateral Entry" in the position applied for field on the application. We will also need for you to attach a copy of your Law Enforcement Certification to the application. Officers will be required to complete a full Academy here in Richmond. The officers may be compensated monetarily for their experience when determining the starting salary.

After we review your application and determine that you meet the minimum requirements, you will be notified of the time, date, and location of the fitness test.

Sworn candidates undergo an extensive background investigation that includes personal, educational, military, driving, employment, and financial histories. Once a conditional offer of employment is made, candidates must submit to a psychological assessment, polygraph, and medical exam.

Employment Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen
  • Must have a High School Diploma or GED
  • Must be 21 years prior to completing our training academy
  • Vision of 20/20 or corrected to 20/20
  • No felony convictions or domestic assault convictions
  • Possess a valid driver's license
  • No D.U.I. convictions in the past 5 years
  • Must pass a written and physical agility test
  • Must pass an extensive background investigation including a polygraph, psychological, medical and drug screening

Police Recruit Training

Police Recruits receive 38 weeks of training while in the Police Academy which includes firearms, officer survival, criminal and traffic investigations, crime scene investigations, riot control, arrest techniques, defensive tactics, cultural diversity, report writing, basic Spanish, and community policing.
